A Gentleman's Guide To Wearing A Tuxedo

A MAN’S GUIDE TO WEAR TUXEDO

A MAN’S GUIDE TO WEAR TUXEDO

You just got invited to a black-tie event and you are in a dilemma because you don’t own one. What do you do? The bad angel will suggest you to rent one. But the good one will say “really? Do you think you’ll be able to carry a tux that doesn’t ooze out your personality?” That’s exactly the question you need to ask yourself.

First off, what is a black-tie event?

A formal evening event where both men and women wear a black attire. It is mostly a dinner party, launch party, wedding, an award function etc. You never wear it to a casual party, unless of course you wish to be the subject of the joke.

Now, What’s a black-tie suit?

Here comes a detailed guide on a tuxedo that should suffice even for a noob in the fashion realm.

A tuxedo is what you watch James Bond wearing in Spectre and drool over his slick look. As stylish as it looks, it is pretty effortless as well. There’s just a tad bit more going on with a tux than a regular suit. It gives you a more luxurious feel, not to mention women swoon over a classy man in tux. There are certain rules that one must follow when wearing a tuxedo:

The Jacket

The Jacket

A tuxedo comes in two styles: a) The Classic Tux with silk or grosgrain lapels which could either be peak or shawl b) The Shawl Tux with satin lapel with, of course, shawl lapel and a white silk pocket square. BUT, if you wish to rent one believe you us, it could even come in a notch lapel. Notch lapels are a complete no in a tuxedo, just FYI. A bespoke tailored tuxedo will always be of a very high quality so you can own it with pride and wear it with panache. After all, you only ever wear it once or twice a year. Make it special.

PS: It could be single breasted or double breasted, choose what suits you best.

Although it is said that a tux shouldn’t have vents, it’s just outright impractical. One rule of wearing a tux is that your shirt is not visible beyond the first button of your tux. Which directly indicates that having a single vent jacket won’t make sense as it might show your shit and it will end up looking tacky. When getting a bespoke tux stitched, get a double vented jacket.

Waistcoat or Cummerbund

Waistcoat or Cummerbund

Tuxedo demands your waist to be completely covered. There is a choice between waistcoast and cummerbund. The cummerbund was initially used by the English officers but it later got replaced by a waistcoat. The bund keeps your waistline in a great shape and looks dapper with a bowtie.

Shirt

Shirt

Tux shirts are very formal yet very classy. The front panel has a double layer of cotton fabric with pleats. If you are bold enough to carry a frilled shirt with confidence, Shakespeare is loved even today. 😉

PS: cufflinks or no cufflinks, the shirt should have double cuffs.

Trousers

Black-tie trousers are straight flat front pants. Planning to wear your most expensive belt with it? Drop the idea RIGHT AWAY! You are dressing up like a dandy, maintain it. Use suspenders they look so elite. You could also go for side tabs for adjusting your waist. Always remember, a good bespoke black-tie trouser will always be high-waisted and have its outer seam in the same fabric as the lapel.

Bowtie

Bowtie

Bow tie is the highlight of a black-tie suit. Needless to say, it must be black and preferably self-tied. The bow tie always in the same fabric as your lapel. You can buy a clip-on bow tie but it’ll just give your entire silhouette a shabby look. Moreover, since you are a gentleman, it’s high time you buckled up and learnt how to tie one.

Shoes

Shoes

A tuxedo is best punctuated with shining black leather oxfords. Make them shine like you don’t have a mirror at home. A man is judged on his choice of shoes. There are other options like slip on pumps that you may opt for, and they look very elegant as well. But, loafers or brogue just crossed your mind don’t even think about them.

Accessorize your look, add a classy set of black cufflinks, highlight your lapel with a beautiful pin and you are good to charm the ‘other’ sex on the evening of the event.
